Smith Cast Iron Boilers
By Gary Sprague
Smith Cast Iron Boilers manufactures gas and oil boilers for residential and commercial applications. Smith Cast Iron Boilers is owned by Mestek, which had sales of approximately $347 million in 2015.
Smith Cast Iron Boilers has its origins in the 1853 opening of a foundry in Westfield, Mass., specializing in iron castings. The foundry owners, brothers Henry and Edwin Smith, later worked with John Mills to create the Mills Boiler. Shortly thereafter the H.B. Smith Co. Inc. was formed. Mestek Inc. has distributed the Smith line of residential, commercial and institutional cast iron boilers since 1990.
Smith cast iron boilers reportedly are known for their durability and long lifetimes. They are designed for installation in residences and large commercial applications, in both steam and water forms. Their most popular boiler is the Smith 8 Series, a hot water/steam oil-fired boiler available in 8 sizes with efficiencies up to 86% AFUE.
