Boiler Ratings by Brand

Homeowners can compare residential boilers by two different types of ratings: consumer satisfaction ratings and efficiency ratings. This page ranks different brands of boilers by both sets of ratings.

FurnaceCompare.com has collected thousands of reviews from homeowners since 2006. Each reviewer assigns a rating from 1 ("Very Unsatisfied") to 5 ("Very Satisfied") that describes their impression of their boiler. This list ranks boilers from best to worst, based on the average of those consumer satisfaction ratings.

  1. Bosch
  2. Slant-fin
  3. Westinghouse
  4. Lennox
  5. Crown
  6. Viessmann
  7. Weil-mclain
  8. Lochinvar
  9. Ny Thermal
  10. Triangle Tube
  11. Heat Transfer Products
  12. Buderus
  13. Utica
  14. Burnham
  15. Peerless
  16. Dunkirk
  17. Baxi
  18. Laars

While we have collected reviews on more than 35 different brands of boilers, we have not included all those brands in the list above. For most of those brands we only have a handful of reviews, and that raises the risk that a single reviewer could bias the average rating too far in one direction. For that reason, we have only included the average rating for brands that at least 10 consumers have reviewed. However, you are welcome to read all of our boiler reviews.

A residential boiler's efficiency rating is typically measured by its AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency). Commercial boiler efficiency is often measured by combustion efficiency rather than AFUE. The "fleet efficiency" of a particular brand is the average efficiency of all of the models sold under that brand name.

Brands with the Highest Fleet Efficiency

Gas, Oil, LPG and Combination Boilers (Brands with more than 20 models)

  5. LAARS

Gas, Oil, LPG and Combination Boilers (Brands with 20 or fewer models)

  1. MUNCHKIN (tied for first place)
  2. HAMILTON ENGINEERING (tied for first place)

Notes on Boiler Ratings

The "fleet efficiency" or "boiler rating" of a particular boiler brand indicates nothing about boiler quality or boiler durability. In addition, although the fleet efficiency of one brand might exceed that of another, this does not necessarily indicate that any particular model of boiler marketed under the first brand out-performs any particular model of boiler marketed under the second. To determine whether one model outperforms another, simply compare the AFUE of the two models.
