Overview of the XR15
Trane's XR15 is a discontinued air conditioner which was promoted by the manufacturer as a reliable and highly efficient unit that can help homeowners benefit from low cooling costs. Available in nine models, it had a SEER rating of up to 17, and qualified as an Energy Star product when installed as part of a compatible HVAC system.
The XR15 was equipped with a Climatuff compressor that was surrounded by its own sound insulator. The Spine Fin outdoor coil, made of aluminum, provided increased heat transference and was designed for low air resistance. Not only was the outdoor coil resistant to corrosion, but so were the zinc-coated Weatherguard fasteners on the full-side louvered panels. These galvanized steel panels were part of the Quick-Sess cabinet, which provided complete protection of the coil. For additional assurance, the DuraTuff base pan was corrosion-resistant.
For an attractive appearance, theXR15 air conditioner was coated with a baked-on powder paint. For further indoor comfort, accessories including a humidifier, air cleaner and ventilator were available. Trane also offered remote access to the home's climate control system through your laptop, tablet, or smart phone with Nexia Home Intelligence.

"Warranty is misleading"
Unless the malfunction is caused by a "functional part," the warranty is worthless. The 10-10-10 is a bunch of baloney. It doesn't run, so what is a functional part?

"Run from the Trane"
Just the facts: Installed a new Trane system (furnace and air conditioning) in 2010, $7200, plus. 09/16 - lines icing up, replaced metering device. Part covered under warranty, $267.00 out of pocket 07/18 - hottest weekend of the year, A/C icing up, inside temperature is 84 degrees. Monday morning, call for service. Diagnosis is leaking coil. Again, part under warranty, but estimate is over $1300 to repair. Asked the tech about a new outside unit since this seems like nearly the cost of a new one. No, they don’t do that, sold as a set. So how much for a new system? Oh, about $4000. Paid another $263 for the service call. My $.02 So, decided to call Trane customer service. Since they’d have to supply a new coil, I asked about options to acquire a new unit. All I got was chapter and verse about the warranty. (Basically, parts only 10 years). I’m done with Trane. Perhaps their other customers are satisfied with a product that fails twice in the first eight years, but I’m not. Shopping for a new unit that is not part of the Ingersoll Rand corporation.

"Trane XR15 5 ton handles Phoenix heat"
Installed by a Trane "Comfort Specialist" dealer on September 20,2011. High stage of the compressor stopped working in June of 2016, the selling dealer installed a new compressor the next day at no charge to me since I had the Trane 10 year extended warranty. The standard Trane 10 year parts warranty picked up the compressor cost and the extended warranty picked up the labor cost. I never even knew there was a problem, because the low stage was cooling the house just fine. The problem was discovered while the tech was doing the semi annual service. So I can say that after just short of 6 years, I have not been out a single dollar in repairs or had any interrupted service. I have saved an average of $400 a year on electricity since replacing the houses original York. I did shop 3 dealers to get the best combo of price, quality installation and post sale service. I will absolutely agree with what others have said on this site, that the system is only as good as the selling, installing and servicing dealer is. My only concern is that Trane and all the other manufacturers are no longer selling extended warranties, they are now all 3rd party warranties. That won't be an issue for me for another 4 years, and maybe by that time these manufacturers will be offering their own extended warranties again. One last comment, if the XR15 works well in the Phoenix area it should do the job anywhere.

After 22 good years with a Keepright, salesman pointed out improved efficiency of modern Trane xr15 would pay for itself. Got 6 years of great efficiency and then, kaput....leak in the coil, days of labour and parts equal price of a new unit. 5-Year warranty of course expired so techie is quick to suggested buying a new unit from his employer. Have I any other choice? Oh, and of course this company doesn't supply Trane products any more because of the cheap parts from China which are only assembled in USA.

"Condenser lasted 6 years"
The unit is very quiet and lowered my electric bill substantially. I was very satisfied until the condenser stopped working after 6 years. Manufacturer warranty was 5 years for a product that should last 15 to 20 years. So much for their marketing hype.

"You can stop a train"
I got me a Trane in 2014. It stop running on 07/09/15. A bad valve, 4 to 5 days to get the part and another 1 day to fix, maybe. Spent lots of money for can't stop a Trane; the repairman has been here 4 times in 1 year.

"I love my trane"
It's all about the company doing the installation. Three Rivers Services installed my XR 15 variable speed system over two years ago. Have had no problems at all with the system. Research the service company before making a decision.

This unit makes a very loud rattling noise when the compressor cycles off. The noise is in the outside unit under the fan blades. The sea coast technician says 75 percent of units makes this noise. The noise is unacceptable to me.

New Trane XR15 installed two years ago with no issues. Chose Trane because of high quality, price, referrals from friends and research. Trane is the best out there, period. I must have talked with 6 installers who sold all brands and they all recommended Trane or American Standard. Consensus was that Trane is one of the only manufacturers that assemble the a/c compressors in-house using proprietary technology that no one else has.

Can't say enough good things about this air conditioner. The current heat wave is proving a real test(heat index over 110) and our Trane XR15 is doing a great job. Its quite, efficient and have never given us a problem. The best thing I can say is that we never think about it.

Replaced a 7 year old Carrier junk pile that died after only 7 years - No Warranty coverage, despite yearly maintenance. Replaced A/C system with Trane XR15, also upgraded thermostat to TR900 to do a better job of managing humidity(another Carrier flaw). Great system for close to 5 years. Quite and dependable - very impressed with Trane and the HVAC Company that did the install.

Late last year had a new Trane A/C System installed. The XR15 has done a great job. Now that we are hitting the high humidity summer months I am working with my contractor to deal with higher than acceptable humidity in the house. Our prior system was undersized so it ran all the time, while inefficient it did have the benefit of removing allot of humdity. The new system, while sized correctly, does not run long eneough to remove the same amount of humdity. The contracor has been great, the came out and reset some of the Comfort-R settings. I also started running a dehudifier in the basement this week. We'll see how it goes. Been impressed with the installer and the Trane hardware.

My Trane is 6 years running - XR15 A/C. Nothing but compliments for how this system is made. The A/C is right outside my bedroom window, I can't hear it at night, which was a priority. The system is larger than by prevoous unit, both in tonnage and diminsions. Its been a troube free system and keeps my house cool w/o any noise/fuss. Also, had a great installer.
Other XR15 Reviews
When it comes to the XR15, many homeowners and HVAC dealers posting on other online discussion forums seem to agree that it has a nice appearance and effectively cools the home while lowering cooling costs. Among the few complaints posted on forums such as hvac-talk.com are issues with the unit's noisy operation. In addition, some online reviews include comments indicating it is an overly high-priced unit when compared to others that offer similar results.
Trane provides a 10-year warranty on the XR15's compressor, outdoor coil and internal functioning parts. However, the product must be registered within 60 days of installation in order for the warranty to be activated. Failure to register the air conditioner in the 60-day period will result in the application of the base limited warranty.
