Overview of the XR14
The Trane XR14 is a single-stage air conditioner with an efficiency rating of up to 16 SEER. It has a Climatuff compressor, an all-aluminum spine fin coil, and a DuraTuff non-corrosive base pan that won't warp, crack or rust. A compressor sound insulator on select models helps keep sound levels as low as 72 decibels. Galvanized steel louvered panels help protect the unit from the elements, while WeatherGuard fasteners and a powder paint finish helps resist rust and corrosion.
Trane recommends that you change the filter on the indoor unit monthly. Other maintenance suggestions include:
- Keep the outdoor unit free of leaves, debris, ice and snow
- Clean the enamel finish with soap and water

I have had a Trane air conditioner coil replaced three times in the last three years. The coil seemed to have "melted" a drip pan and no one knows the reason why. I now have found out that Trane discontinued this product. Well, I am sure there were production reasons on your part. I am entitled to some reimbursement and will not quit until I do. I ended up getting a new furnace thinking it was just the combination ($4500.00) of the new air conditioner and the older furnace. But that is not the case as I found out after much research on my own. Your product was/is defective and I am entitled to compensation!! As you can see, I am not a satisfied customer. It is up to you now!! Western Hills Heating and Air have been my furnace/air conditioner people for over 25 years...they are not the problem. Please get this resolved with me.

"Motor died after 1.5 years"
We had this unit installed in November 2015; it's part of a hybrid unit so during the winter it provides heat until temps drop and then our furnace kicks in. It also provides air conditioning during warmer months. Recently we heard some noises from the system- kind of like a fast rattle or a loud fan; a few hours later the whole unit stopped working. Our service provider confirmed that the motor died- it's July 2017 (and very hot) and we've had the unit for just over one and a half years. I would not recommend this unit and would not buy the Trane brand again.

I was working in the garage and heard a loud hissing noise like a sprinkler head blew off. It was dusk so I knew the sprinklers weren't on. I followed the sound to the AC condenser and I see sparks flying out the top of the condenser unit. Looking into the unit, the plug to the compressor is on the pan floor and kinda burnt looking and the Freon is blasting out of where it was plugged in. The AC is only three years old.

"Have high expectations for this unit"
Bought this unit in April 2015 to replace a 20-year-old Lennox system. The Lennox, in the last 5 years of owning it, needed capacitors, a fan motor, a control board and leaks patched in the evaporator. After spending $700 in repairs I wasn't going to spend another $1,000 on a new evaporator and more expensive r22. I don't have complaints about the Lennox, I think I got more than my money's worth on it. My hvac guy put in the Lennox and I would have gone with another one (glad I didn't) but he no longer sells that brand. He sells Armstrong Air and Trane now. I really wasn't hung up on a particular brand but I didn't know anything about Armstrong Air so I went with Trane. Couldn't be happier with my decision. The Trane XR14 combined with the all aluminum evaporator and the XV80 furnace work flawlessly. My old Lennox was mostly trouble free for 15 years and worked well but not like the Trane. Although they are both 3.5 ton units the Lennox would run non-stop from noon until sundown to maintain 75 during the hottest part of summer. When it got really hot (>100) and humid it couldn't maintain 75 and the temperature would go up to 78-80 degrees. It has always been like this even when it was brand new. The Trane has no trouble maintaining 75 even when the outside temperature is over 100. Even on those days it cycles about twice an hour and doesn't run non-stop. Trane is not kidding when they say their all-aluminum coil is better at heat transfer than traditional aluminum fin copper tubing condensers. Even though it's only 1 year old it has worked flawlessly since it's first start up. I think most people who have problems with a new system of any brand are not matching all the components and getting a bad install. When I bought the Lennox it was to replace a Carrier condenser that needed 2 compressors and numerous repairs in 10 years and never cooled well. The A/C guy I hired to replace the Carrier said that it was slightly undersized at 3 tons but most of the problems I was having was that it was a new condenser connected to a 14 year old Fedders evaporator and furnace. Nothing was wrong with Carrier as a brand. He stressed you should always match the condenser with a new evaporator and air handler/furnace. Saving money by keeping your old furnace/air handler because it's working fine will cost you dearly down the road. Rheem, Carrier, Trane, Goodman etc. engineer and test their equipment to work with their own evaporators and air handlers. Putting your brand new Trane A/C with your old Carrier air handler will probably cause problems. For example, he said Trane evaporators are taller than evaporators from most other brands and Trane only makes 1 type of A coil. Some installers will put in a different brand or a N coil if there is a problem with clearance instead of redoing the plenum to fit the Trane evaporator. Something this minor could cause problems a few years down the road.

"House's first system and lasted 12 years"
This unit was the one that came with the house and the air handler was a gas lower end model (in Florida you don't need heat other than the law requires you have it). This system ran flawlessly for almost 12 years, then the A-frame coil got a leak and with it being so old we decided to replace the system with a Tempstar, which was big mistake. The Tempstar is a high-end xtx+ seer 19 system and has broken twice in the first 15 months of being installed! Tempstar/Carrier is junk, should have stayed with Trane when we bought a new one.

Unit was built 10/2006 and installed 8/2007. Big selling point was efficiency of variable speed motor in the air handler. On 7/13/2013, the motor was not running and I called Miller Air Conditioning Inc. That sold the unit to me and installed it in Lake Placid, Florida. I was informed that the motor was out of warranty and that a new one would cost over $1000.00. I replaced it with a single speed motor that cost $618.00 installed. I would not advise anyone to buy Trane products with such unreliability. The original cost of purchase and installation was over $5300.00.

Most of the posts regarding the XR14 on sites such as doityourself.com have to do with minor problems like a faulty thermostat or problems due to poor installation, such as the homeowner whose unit was not cooling well due to the ducts not being properly insulated.
