Overview of the XL20i
The Trane XL20i high-efficiency air conditioning unit offers up to 20 SEER performance. This model uses dual compressors to maximize efficiency by consistently operating with the smaller compressor and only using the larger component when the system detects a drastic change in temperature.
According to the manufacturer, the XL20i boasts consistent, quiet operation due to an adjustable fan motor and compressor sound insulator designed to minimize noise. Additional components, including galvanized steel cabinets, a rustproof basepan, zinc-coated fasteners and a powder-paint finish, contribute to the unitís durability.
This series also is equipped with Trane's ComfortLink II system, which controls communication between components and can be used to automatically charge, configure and calibrate the unit.

"No parts on one year old unit"
We purchased two top of the line ah and condenser systems from Trane in 2016. Last month, the main circuit board in our ah stopped working. In July in Florida, no ac for five days. We were told by our contractor that Trane had stopped making that ah right after we bought them. They had to scramble for parts all over the country at other dealers to find one for us. What happens next time??? I called Trane and sent up forms with absolutely no follow up or help. I'd strongly recommend against buying Trane products

Purchased XL20i Heat Pump in 2013. One week after installation, the unit stopped cooling due to lack of refrigerant. A bad weld on a manufacturing nipple on the condenser coil was found to be leaking and was welded. Promised efficiency and 20% reduction is electrical consumption was never realized. Actual savings was between 8 and 10%. Four years later, the unit again stops cooling due to loss of refrigerant. Again, the condenser coil is leaking. New coil installation cost $600 labor, which is not covered by the manufacturer's warranty. After 25 years and three Trane units, I will not buy another Trane.

Bought an entire new $8,600 Trane AC and gas furnace system 5 years ago. Last week the refrigerant line dryer leaked on the compressor unit. Charged me $800 for labor and refrigerant to repair, even though the dryer "part" was covered. Charged $418 to refill refrigerant --not covered under warranty even though the defective line dryer was the cause of the lost refrigerant. Spoke to Trane customer relations. They basically told me too bad, refrigerant is not covered under the parts warranty even though the refrigerant is part of the compressor. No one should consider a Trane product with this deceptive warranty policy.

"Pretty good unit"
I have had the 3 Ton XL20i HVAC system for about 4-5 years now. So far, it has been a really good unit. It is a dual stage AC with a combined SEER rating of 18 or so. It immediately cut our electric bill by about 35% which was great. The outside AC unit is on the wall outside my bedroom and it is super quiet. Performance has been good with no issues to speak of. There was a leak in the line but that was an installation issue and not anything wrong with the unit itself. Once the installers fixed it, it has worked great. About the only thing I don't like about this is the Comfort Link II thermostat. It is not very user intuitive so programming is a pain. It is also a monochrome display so it is not always easy to read. I know the newer models are color and may be easier to program (not sure about that or not). I also don't like that the thermostat control is proprietary and I cannot use something like a Nest thermostat. Overall, I have been pleased with the unit. I do wonder how accurate or balanced this site is though. Having looked at all the top brands, none of them had any sense of balance to the reviews. Virtually every brand I looked through had a 2:1 ration of 1 star to 5 star reviews. So, this seems to indicate that more people with negative experiences are posting reviews as I cannot find any major AC brand with more positive reviews than negative. It's actually why I posted this review as my experience with Trane has been quite positive.

I had a XL20i installed in September, 2013. The coils started leaking in less than two years. The cost to replace the coils cost me $754. 00 on August 13, 2015. The initial cost of the unit was $9800. Don't ever get a Trane.

This is the worst piece of scrap ever made. Sadly, Trane knows there are problems with this unit but ignores them. My unit is about five years old. I had one year with no issues then all hell broke loose. I am on the fourth set of compressors. Last year every part in the unit was replaced. This year the problems have begun again. Throw your money in the toilet by getting this junk.

"Top of the line air conditioner"
I have owned this air conditioner for about 5-7 years. I like its seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) of up to 20 and a Comfort-R feature that's great for controlling humidity. For the 7 years I have held this machine it hasn't given me a problem at all. The XL20i boasts consistent, quiet operation due to an adjustable fan motor and compressor sound insulator designed to minimize noise. The only thing that I dislike about this is that I don't get a federal tax discount. But that is okay since I have a great product. I only have done the 5 year maintenance, which is required. I would buy the same product again and I would also recommend this product to my friends as well.

Unit breaks down every 3-4 weeks usually on weekends or holidays. Is about three years old. Both compressors replaced as well as a few other parts, overflow valve and some auto suction safety shut off. In reading reviews it seems Trane knows of these recurring issues but choose to do nothing about it. I generally have to power down unit then turn back on and it might work. All you pay for with a Trane is the name with crappy a/cs that break down with regularity. I encourage you to not be snowed by their ads...look elsewhere. You will save money and be much happier with another more dependable brand.

Two units for two years $25000 later, never been without a service call or expense. We had a better luck with our 20 years old Tempstar, We are sweating now while waiting for a command board and motor.?? We were told we are buying the best with least problems... Wrong.!

This is my fourth Trane ac system in 28 years. Live in south Florida so bought the XL20i to help with humidity removal. Have had the unit for twenty months. The compressor motor died and the ac tech had a very difficult time finding a new motor. He found one someplace in the state and I was told that I would have to pay for shipping in order to get it in a couple of days. Otherwise I'd have to wait weeks. I called Trane customer service and the rep told me that other people have complained about parts not being available for weeks. I have never had an issue with the other three units. I will never buy Trane again and would advise consumers to stay away from Trane.

"Trane is off the tracks, running amuck"
I bought two XL20i units five years ago. The first floor unit has never had an issue. The second floor unit has had over 20 service calls resulting in replacement of the air handler, several thermostats, indoor and outdoor circuit boards and 5 visits by the local distributor. The system is unreliable and seems to fail whenever the outdoor temp/humidity rise, I.E. whenever we need it to work. Our installer has been great and has offered to replace the whole system with a comparable Lennox unit. We are definitely taking them up on the offer. You can stop a Trane......just try to turn it on and get it to cool. Class action? Count me in!!!!

"Poor reliability and poor performance"
Top of line unit for Trane installed for 18 months. Two failures, one an installation problem and one a failed coil. Trane replaced the coil under warranty, but labor costs not covered. Biggest issue has been that the unit is not noticeably any more efficient than the 12 seer unit it replaced.

"Great unit since 2009"
Our builder's unit finally went out after 6 years. Purchased the XL20i after considering competing models from other manufacturers. Completely satisfied. After five years the only problem was a leak at the solder joint. Not an equipment problem but an installation problem. Had warranty, so no cost to me.

"Trane XL20i HIGH TECH JUNK"
Last year I wrote telling buyers beware of this unit after both compressors failed and had to be replaced within the first year. Now after another year the insulation inside the coil box has fallen down and prevented the unit from cooling. Wishing I had never, never purchased this system. Good luck to anyone who opts to buy this system! Hot in Texas

"Do Not Buy Trane, you will be sorry!"
Bought top of the line, expected it to actually work - never has. We get lots of communication errors, about 3-4 times per week the unit stops working temporarily due to those ongoing issues that nobody has been able to fix. Authorized dealer gave up and won't return my calls. Tried Trane directly but they do not care. Have also had 3 compressors and several controller boards replaced in the 2 years we've owned it. Meanwhile the 3 American Standard 15 year old units we have are chugging along with no problems. Do Not Buy Trane!!!!

"Happy With the Trane Ultra Efficient A/C"
I am pleased with this central air conditioning unit. The ultra efficiency XL20i is billed as a top-of-the-line unit and so far it lives up to expectations. We have had this cooling system for 2 summers. It is very quiet compared to our old unit -- so quiet in fact that we never hear the motor engage or know by listening alone whether it's on. The house, however, stays evenly cool. The best part is that indoor humidity is reduced with this model which for where we live (NJ) is a major plus. Efficiency is also important. Although this model cost more than our previous (adjusting, we'll say, for inflation) our utility bills are noticeably lower, which over the course of the five-six months (roughly) that the ac is used makes a significant difference. The model is fairly sleek and durable, less an eyesore than the big clunkers out there. So far we have not had any problems and I would definitely recommend it to a friend, however bear in mind this is a new system and problems at this stage would be unlikely.

"Can't stop this Trane XL20i"
Four years and never a problem. This A/C unit, XL20i, has been through allot in a short time. We've had several massive hail storms. One so bad that I had to get the roofing replaced. The A/C unit, while the case is dented, has never missed a beat. We've had temperatures over 100 for more than a month this year! No issues.

Bought my Trane set-up 4 years ago. Its a highend system XL20i. We have a large home, over 4,500 sq ft with lots of windows. I was concerned that one a/c system wouldn't be enough. The Trane dealer assured me it was sized correctly and that my duct work was done correctly sized for the system. He was right, its worked like a charm. Summers are hot and this system work quietly and w/o any fuss. Our prior system(Rudd) died after 8 years and always struggled to keep the house cool. It was a great purchase and there's nothing else out there as good as this system, I investigated all the major brands.

"Extremely satisified with the Trane XL20i Air Conditioner."
I purchased the Trane XL20i air conditioner a little over a year ago and so far I'm extremely pleased with the quality of this unit. The XL20i is a member of Trane's "Ultra Efficiency" line of units. It should be noted that the Trane XL20i is among the industry's most efficient air conditioners available for consumers. This unit is extremely affordable, and comes packed with a plethora of features. The XL20i features efficient performance and has two compressors (one for milder less harsh weather, and another for those extremely hot and humid days). This unit also offers quiet comfort meaning it offers a multi-stage fan motor that adjusts speed quietly to provide less noise. So far I'm extremely pleased with my purchase. I live in Ft. Lauderdale, FL and as most of you are aware it can get extremely hot down here so a quality central air unit is a must. The only complaint I have with this unit is that one of the compressors broke shortly after purchase. Trane was great about honoring the warranty and swiftly corrected the issue. I would recommend the Trane XL20i to anyone looking for a quality central air conditioning unit.

I had an XL20i installed to replace the 22 yr. old Trane that was still working. Trane had a rebate and the tax rebate was $1500. So far, so good. The unit is very quiet and the humidity control is great! The dealer had a 10 yr. Parts & Labor warranty or I would have been reluctant to buy a highly technical unit. Houston in the summer can be brutal on your budget and body. Maybe this will help both!
Other XL20i Reviews
Homeowners and contractors alike seem to be pleased with the XL20i. Reviews on hvac-talk.com note how easy the unit is to install, and compliment the unit's performance and air quality control.
Webhvac.com and topratedhvac.com users also comment on the high quality of this unit, stating it's "at the top of its class." According to the reviewers, the XL20iís unique features and components, such as the ComfortLink II system, help set this unit apart from other top-tier units.
However, the same reviewers note this product may not attract all consumers because of the high price point. Threads on gardenweb.com support this notion, with consumers stating the price is "overkill" for an air conditioning system.
