Overview of the XL14i
The Trane XL14i air conditioner is a (discontinued) split-system central air conditioner with an efficiency rating of up to 15 SEER. It had a single-speed compressor, but could be matched with a variable speed blower (either a furnace or an air handler) to reduce noise and operate at higher efficiencies. Trane also marketed a heat pump under the XL14i series name, which had a heating efficiency of up to 9 HSPF.
The XL14i was available with either R-22 (commonly known as Freon) or R-410 (commonly known as Puron) refrigerant.

"Nothing but headaches"
Purchased and installed a 4tWX4024A1000AB Trane heat pump 10/2004 to serve an addition on our home. 1. Automatic thermostat doesn't work well with fan speed control. Don't like the high velocity when temperature set point changes and fan takes off to try to quickly satisfy the new setting. Sometime the fans seems to be lost and ramps up and down constantly. 2. Year 7 - replaced AHU fan motor and speed controls 3. Year 10 - lost condenser fan start and run caps 4. Year 12 - lost condenser fan motor No doubt a quiet condenser but the AHU fan speed issue is not good.

"Can't start a Trane"
I was sold this unit 10 years ago along with the furnace. I've had nothing but problems with this unit. First the outside coil went bad and Freon leaked out. Then the capacitor blew out. Then the inner coil went bad losing Freon and was replaced. In each case I was told the leaks were fixed. Now again the unit is down after only 1 year after an 800 dollar repair. Unit has only been used a few months total in the 10 years, breaking down almost every year. I'm tired of paying thousands just to use it a month or two every year.

"I Have Had This Unit for 10 Years"
I have had this unit for 10 years and never had a problem. Of course I have had it serviced every spring which may account for the excellent review. You have to take care of any equipment to expect it to take care of you.

"Trane AC Units - Not Worth the Money"
If you're looking for a terrible AC product, that is overpriced then Trane products are for you. I purchased a high-end unit in 2001, and have almost paid 50% of the original cost in repairs. In less than 10 years, I have replaced the humidifier, the condenser fan, condenser fan coil, and not one(1) but three (3)-yes three of the variable speed motor controllers. Each time Trane is happy to charge you $500.00 for the part, plus the $200 the technician charges. Prior to this, I had a Carrier unit for 10 years and NO mechanical issues or breakdowns. The only reason I replaced it was 1) it has a lower SEER rating, and 2) I thought by replacing it I would avoid continued maintenance repairs. Never again, if the AC guys says TRANE, you better slam the door, lock it, or be ready to constantly repair it. By the way, I reached out to TRANE, and no help, no support, no concern.

"Do not buy unless you want constant grief"
I bought my Trane XL14i a/c unit after reading all the hype. It cost more than double the nearest competitor's model but I went ahead and bought it thinking Trane was 'the best' on the market. Wrong. Well...this system is still fairly new, in my opinion, yet it has failed each summer since we had it installed in 2007. Expansion valve...every time. Each time it failed...it took them nearly a week to get the new valve in and get me up and running. It seems as though these valves are not kept in stock. Oh, and Trane was quick to mail me a postcard, telling me how much they paid my local hvac dealer each time it failed (while under warranty). As though that was somehow my fault, I guess. My warranty ran out, so I tried to purchase another year of extended warranty. I asked for nothing free, simply more warranty time so I wouldn't have to pay these outrageous repair bills. Trane said no way, Jose...this came from the top executives, by the way. So I wrote Trane a 'shame' letter. I might as well have gone outside and barked at the moon...no response from Trane. Be advised...your state's "Lemon Law" might apply to your unhappy situation with Trane. If you are as apprehensive about your unit's future performance as I am...you will want to know which avenues you might pursue. Would I purchase another Trane? Right now, no...but if they'd meet me halfway and agree to sell me additional warranty time I might change my mind.

"XL14C-VERY DISATISFIED, NOT DEPENDABLE, CONSTANT SERVICE CALLS 2 YRS,2MO"
Constant loss of freon, dealer will not step up and replace coils. dealer will not upgrade (even if we pay differnce) we know for a fact that our unit has the same defect in similar units with first hand knowledge. Lip service and lack of integrity, definitely drove me away from Trane and their dealer. My commercial property and associated partners will also be made aware. Word of mouth is the most damaging type of advertising.

First year it had two pin hole leak in the copper line, fix ran me $200 the 3 year my circuit breaker went out had to replace. The 4 year the screw that holds the lid with the fan part broke, then replace. It been good for two years now. The six year the compressor went out on me no more warranty. Looking about $ 1300 to replace. Don't have the money yet. Still trying to save up for new compressor. This unit was nothing but headache. And waste for money. Still paying for the pos unit. I thought Trane was the best but I'll never buy from them again

"Griffiths Energy Services installed Trane scam"
We paid Griffiths Energy Services, Baltimore almost $6,000,00 to install a new Trane a/c system, 10/2007. 9/ 2011, we noticed our basement wet with black mold on walls. Griffths servicemen claim freon leaks. Problem continues as of 5/12, and we get billed $200+ every time we call Griffiths. Isn't it a scam!!

"Don't Buy a Trane"
We purchased a Trane air conditioner model 4ttx4042a1000a. All was well till 6 years later we had the control panel go out (Trance xu9v). It cost $696.00 to replace. Less than 15 months later the same panel went out again for $743.00. After repeated pleas to the local company in Salt Lake and then with the regional office in Denver, Trane would not even look at my furnace to see what had caused this repeated and expensive failure. I was simply ignored and told that parts were warrantied for 12 months and that's that. Our previous furnace had no problems for 19 years. It was only replaced to accommodate a central air condition system. I am disappointed at the lack of interest and customer service Mr. Stacey Hieb the regional manager and the field representative Ethan Smith in Salt Lake. a company that cannot guarantee a part of almost $800.00 for longer than a year should be completely avoided.

"XL GOOD, BUT DON'T GET TOO BIG"
Got a XL 14 in 2009, which works well and is quiet. But don't get the unit too big. Replaced a 4 ton with a 5 ton unit for first floor of our two story home in Houston. It gets hot here, but this unit is too big. The house is too humid, and the high air velocity intrusive. If you have an up and downstairs unit, go with the 4 ton for the first floor. 5 tons are fine for a one story home as you have the additional heat from the attic.
