Overview of the RALB
Manufactured beginning in 1994, the Rheem RALB is a discontinued, standard efficiency cooling unit. This 1.5- to 5-ton series is a member of Rheem's Classic Series and offers up to 12.5 SEER. This series is available in seven different models ranging in cooling capacities from 17,000 to 56,500 BTU/H.
All models of the RALB are equipped with a Copeland scroll compressor, single-speed motor, copper tube/aluminum fin coils and drawn base pan for efficient, quiet operation. The interior components are protected by a powder-painted galvanized steel cabinet, while a wraparound louvered grill shields the coils from environmental hazards.
Accessible refrigerant connections, control box and a separate compressor box contribute to the easy installation and service of this unit, according to the manufacturer. In addition, the RALB is compatible with a full line of factory-installed accessories, including a compressor time delay control, high/low pressure control and crankcase heater.

"Three Units in 10 Years"
I've owned three Rheem units in 10 years and the air handlers don't last. My last unit (literally) was purchased two years ago and has had the circuit breaker fail twice, the coils leak, and the cpu went out. I've had different installers in each case, and had the air handler both in the house and in the attic. I also maintainted the unit. I would recommend any other brand but Rheem.
Other RALB Reviews
As an older unit, the RALB’s online presence largely consists of system issues and troubleshooting inquiries. Questions posed to contractors on sites such as hvac-talk.com or justanswer.com involve problems with the unit freezing or internal components such the fan motor failing, or instances where the system simply will not turn on.
Despite the system issues, homeowners report very few problems with their RALB overall. Some consumers even mention having their unit as long as 17 years. Contractors on hvacmechanic.com suggest homeowners fix their unit when troubleshooting issues arise rather than replacing it. This unit, they note, has a long lifespan when taken care of properly.
