Overview of the Prestige
The Rheem Prestige Series of air conditioners is comprised of three types: The two-stage serial communicating units (RASL-JEC, RARL-JEC), the two-stage units (RARL-JEZ, RASL-JEZ) and the single-stage unit (RAPM-JEZ).
The two-stage serial communicating units have a serial communicating enabled comfort system that includes onboard diagnostics. They also have an active protection feature that halts the compressor if harmful conditions are detected and then sends a notice to the thermostat that instructs the homeowner to call a service technician. These models come with a 2-stage Copeland scroll compressor, steel cabinet, high/low pressure controls and can reach up to 19.5 SEER. They are also Legacy Enabled, meaning they can be used with other Rheem Prestige components already in the home.
Both the two-stage and single-stage models have the Comfort Systems onboard diagnostic systems and Active Protection to stop the compressor in the event of potentially damaging conditions, and are Legacy-Enabled. They are equipped with a scroll compressor, are encased by a steel cabinet, and have high/low pressure controls. The two-stage units can reach up to 18.5 SEER, while the single-stage units can attain 16 SEER.

"Don't buy Rheem anymore"
I have had the unit for 6 1/2 years and I'm on the 4th evaporator coil. Rheem knows the coils are defective but will not do anything about it. There are class action lawsuits for this product. Avoid Rheem at all costs.

"DO NOT buy a RHEEM"
Do yourself a huge favor and heed my warning. Do not under any circumstances buy a Rheem. My system has not worked properly since day 1 and after many warranty service calls over the last 6 months it still doesn't. So far they have replaced the inside coil, the expansion valve twice, the dryer twice, the low pressure sensor, the copper lines, the Freon and added a dryer so there are two. What a piece of total garbage. I have wasted many hours in service calls, if you want your life to turn into a stressful hell buy a Rheem. I wouldn't buy a toothpick holder from them if they made one, it probably wouldn't hold toothpicks.

"No provision to oil caused motor failure"
$384.18 was the cost to replace the condenser fan motor because there was no provision to oil it. The only thing wrong with the motor was that a bearing froze. That would not have happened if the motor had provision to oil it. Also, I have learned that if the evaporator motor fails because of an internal circuit board failure, the very expensive motor will have to be replaced because there is no provision to replace a failed circuit board.

"Don't get Rheemed. Stay away"
Rheem HVAC system is 6 years old. Every winter the heat goes out, every summer the AC goes out. Customer service is no help. Parts are under warranty but labor isn't. Have to sweat in 90 degree heat for 6 days waiting on parts. Stay far away from Rheem!

"It's all about the contractor"
Installed two units with a first class contractor. My home is icy cold in south Louisiana. Contractor has called once to follow up and came by once already to double check the installation, room temps. etc. Received a 3-year comprehensive warranty from the contractor as well as the 10-year from Rheem on parts. You can install the Cadillac of units with a subpar contractor and have trouble forever.

My 5-ton 16 SEER Rheem A/C package unit is only two years old. The condenser motor went out five days ago and air comes out warm. The installing company has a good reputation and subcontracts to Home Depot, where Rheem is promoted and advertised at the store. Their installer came out and told me that the condenser motor has burnt out and needs to be replaced. That it is under warranty from Rheem. That the new motor has to be ordered from their Rheem supplier and will hopefully arrive in two days. It is the middle of July with temperatures over 100 and my home is 92 degrees inside from 5 pm to 11 pm and 87 most of the day. This is with all the ceiling fans running on high and windows open for air circulation at night. I will not forget this when this Rheem unit's useful life ends and will most certainly not buy a Rheem brand in the future!

"Bangs every time it starts up. Appropriately named Rheem."
First installed, it worked great, quiet, then started banging. Sounded like someone crashing into the garage wall. Replaced unit, same results. Put a can of AC lube in it. Same thing. Put a second can in, still the same problem. Appropriately named Rheem as I am feeling rheemed. Good news, sometimes it's not as loud as others.

Our Rheem condenser is 5 years old. It's had two leaks in the tube walls of the condenser coils in the last 5 years requiring very expensive repairs. The first was 10 days out of the one year warranty and Rheem refused to cover it.

Unit shuts off randomly after running steady. There's no clear common denominator. Have to cut power for 30 minutes and it resets. Sometimes it runs for 2-3 weeks with no issue then randomly shuts down.

I purchased a new high efficiency unit and air handler on 9/25/09. To date, we have replaced more than 9 parts and been days without parts waiting for them to be shipped. I have called customer service requesting a representative to call back, with no luck. For $6700.00, I have a lemon that is unreliable, noise compressed and very unhappy. If you can help to have someone call me, I'd appreciate it. Don't buy this unit. Unsatisified customer in Myrtle Beach.

"Don't expect to be trouble free with a new Rheem!"
We just had our unit installed in January 2014. I would never have bought it if the break down of my other one had occurred a few months sooner. It has never worked right! I am not sure where to turn for help! The 3yr old Rheem heat pump at my old home just broke down due to a leaking coil and they want $500 plus refrigerant to fix it! Oh, but the part is free. Thank God!! When I asked how much/hour they are planning on the answer was," It doesn't matter if it takes 5 minutes." When my mom fixed her 2y old Rheem earlier this year (which she bought because I hadn't yet had problems with mine), it ended up being cheaper for her to buy the new part and have it installed by a licensed ac guy that was not a Rheem dealer! Any ideas for help on my new Rheem? I am not sure if the problem isn't just the incompetence of the installer on this one! When I call the factory, they blame him, but no one is helping me! Something is very wrong with this picture!!!

"What A PIECE OF JUNK!"
Our air conditioner still under warranty: replaced blower motor, indoor evaporator, now being a Thursday another part is bad and can't get part until Monday or Tuesday!!!!!! Did I mention we are in Florida!!!!! So far the cost to us has been $492!!!!! and climbing!!!! I can"t believe Rheem can put out such a product!!!! I think possibly a recall should be in order!!! Oh and who's going to pay for motel? My husband, a disabled vet, sure can't stay here!!!! Rheem needs to step up and replace this piece of junk!!!

"Always breaking down"
We purchased a whole new unit a few years ago and it has broken down every season. Ironically with many parts not covered and labor not covered. Horrible!!!! Thousands wasted. Heat lst in winter, air in summer. Every season

"PRESTIGE RIP OFF"
Purchased a Rheem Prestige unit Dec, 2010. Lasted the first year without a problem. Too bad I can't say the same for years 2&3. First thing to go txv, part warrantied but it cost 350 in labor. Reversing valve switch. Two service calls on air handler. All together over 700 in labor. When I did my homework Consumer Reports ranked it 2nd behind American Standard. ( I will not be renewing Consumer Reports any longer). This has been a 4000+ disaster. My original system a 3.0 ton Carrier didn't give me a problem from 1996 to 2010. Only changed out the unit because I needed 3.5 tons for an addition to home. I will never buy another Rheem product for my home again, and I will be needing to replace my pool heater in the near future. Stay away from Rheem!!!

"My Rheem AC is Junk"
Bought this unit (RASL048) in December '09. In the span of less than 3 years I have replaced a compressor fan motor, an air handler fan motor, and now the evaporator and the expansion valve are being replaced. Although the parts are under warranty, Rheem in its infinite wisdom has figured out how to at least get $89.00 out of me for each one of these parts, with a parts distribution fee. So that is $267.00 I've had to shell out on this piece of crap. Fortunately, I purchased an extended warranty with my original dealer whom I have no complaint with. Had I not, I can only imagine how much I would have sunk into this money pit!! I will never purchase another Rheem product again!! Do your homework before purchasing one. Keep in mind that Rheem rhymes with Ream.

"Rheem is JUNK ... Total waste of money."
We bought Rheem from Florida Energy Water and Air (FEWA) on 25 June 2013. Within a month we found pool of water on top of the inside unit the water was where the unit connects to the vent.. Called FEWA as we have one year warranty on labor and ten year warranty on parts. They send a technician who did not know much. He just placed more mastik on the vent. Two days layer we found the vent still wet and water leaking. Again called fewa who again sent a technician who was puzzled with the situation. Today is 3 august 2013 and the unit is not cooling at all. We live florida and its hot hell ... We called up the fewa and they have not send a technician . Within a month and a half rheem has stopped working. Rheem sure is a piece of junk and so is the company Florida energy water and air. The person Greg, who is our FEWA contact is surely not helpful. Totally regret our decision to go with fewa and rheem. I want my money back !!!!! Take your crappy unit n return my money fewa !!!!!!

"Nothing But Trouble and Expense"
This system is a money pit and Rheem's warranty is a joke. I have experienced repeated compressor problems starting shortly after buying the house and both compressors have been replaced at least once. The system is so loud on start-up and shut down that the neighbors complain. The installation of hard starts and sound blankets and solenoids have done nothing to repair the system. The installing dealer is great and has done the best he can dealing with this junk.

Just over two years since I purchased this a/c unit, it went down no less than three times causing major concerns and risk to my elderly household during the the sweltering heat. As recent as yesterday the technicians had carried out extensive testing and repairs to do fix a problem. What is more disturbing is that advertising by rheem of its products is the opposite of actual performance, and I and many more dissatisfied customers can bear testimony to this fact. Rheem should step up to the plate and take responsibility for defective product and compensation those impacted by the hardship they have to endure during the period of breakdown. I will not purchase a rheem product and would advise potential purchasers not to make the same mistake as I did.

This is a top of the line unit(model#RAPM 056jez)..seer 17+. 5+ ton. Was told it would be quiet. No way. Blower is very noisy inside house. Outside okay. Within a few months... started tripping breake model (new house)Technician came out (Monroe service) and fixed. Now... 2 weeks outside of labor warranty...unit has failed. Freon leak in condensor coil, a brand new unit. Had to go over 1 week without air while my installer could get around to it. They still are waiting for parts from Rheem. The service charge will be over 1000 bucks because of Freon recharge and labor which Rheem will not pick up according to my installer. Don't buy this Rheem RAPM 056JEZ unit. It is junk.

Just brought a 14.5 Rheem unit with a Rheem Prestige air handler and it is working as promise. Elite heating and air conditioning of North Haven, CT did an excellent job as well as given me the best bang for the buck . Highly recommend this unit from Rheem as well as Elite Air Conditioning.

"So much better than Carrier!"
I have a new Rheem "prestige" furnace and air conditioner, and I couldn't be happier! The Carrier unit I replaced was only five years old but the compressor burnt up. I upgraded to the higher seer condenser and the furnace with the variable motor. This unit is down right cheap to use compared to the Carrier and it really is super quite! I'm so happy I decided to do my homework because it was worth it to do the upgrade!
Other Prestige Reviews
The reviewers at consumerresearch.com consider the Prestige to be a reliable air conditioner series. Contractors on the hvac-talk.com discussion forum say that the Prestige’s sound levels are as low as reported by the manufacturer. Contractors also like the humidity control features of the top-tier Prestige models, although say that the comparable models from other manufacturers may offer more bells and whistlers. Most questions posted online concerning the Prestige system have to do with adjustments made to the homeowner’s preference, rather than actual troubleshooting or complaints.
Both of the two-stage units come with a 10-year conditional unit replacement warranty and a 10-year parts warranty. The single-stage unit has a 5-year conditional unit replacement warranty and a 10-year limited parts warranty. In order for unit protection to apply, the consumer must register the product with Rheem and the units must be installed with a new Rheem air handler or indoor coil with a Rheem gas furnace.
