Overview of the PSA1BD
The Maytag PSA1BD air conditioner is made by Fedders, which is itself a subsidiary of Nordyne. The unit is a split- system air conditioner, available from 2- to 5-ton capacity, and was designed for slab or rooftop installation. The PSA1BD is a 13 SEER product, yet when it is used with Maytag’s multi-speed air handler or variable speed blower kit, the efficiency rating can reach up to 14 SEER.
This Maytag product is a compact unit manufactured with a brushed stainless steel cabinet. A polyester finish, protected with silicone, trims the unit. Such protection, in addition to the standard 950 hour salt spray test, is meant to help reduce risk of corrosion. The maintenance-free, heavy-duty PSC motor is permanently lubricated, and the 2.5-inch pedestal base is designed with drainage holes to allow precipitation to escape.
Copper tubing and aluminum fin coils are used to maximize heat transfer, efficiency and reliability, according to the manufacturer. The compressor is protected by a low-pressure control and 5-minute restart time delay.
The working parts of the PSA1BD are accessed by a removable top grill that does not require the disconnection of fan motor leads. Side panels allow access to the compressor, while the refrigerant system is reportedly easy to service because of its brass full-service valves.

Had the Maytag AC unit installed last year in June and we just love it. Very quiet and it cools the house beautifully. I've had so many compliments when people see it in my back yard. Definitely would buy it again!

I have two Maytag AC units and furnaces, one for the upstairs and one for the downstairs. The larger unit's AC Compressor (model PSA1BD036KA) just locked up. Maybe from the installation error or product defect, not sure and I was a little surprised. My cost was $70 freight and $89 for a service call. I hope this is not an indication of its future performance...
Other PSA1BD Reviews
HVAC discussion boards do not contain much feedback about the Maytag PSA1BD. However, in recent years, Consumer Affairs has collected a number of negative comments about Maytag air conditioners. While trends about performance and failure are absent, homeowners are displeased with customer service and, as a result of Fedders company takeover of production, warranty protection and customer care is in question.

The Maytag PSA1BD is covered by a 10-year warranty. It also comes with a 5-year Maytag “Dependability Promise,” in which Maytag promises to replace the product with a like product if problems arise. However, the Dependability Promise only applies when homeowners have both a Maytag outdoor air conditioner and indoor coils.
