Overview of the JS3BC
The Gibson JS3BC is a discontinued single-stage, split-system air conditioner offering 12 to 13 SEER. This compact series is available in seven different models with cooling capacities ranging from 1.5 to 5 tons, and is designed for slab or rooftop mounting for single-family or multifamily homes and light commercial use. The series uses R-22 refrigerant.
The JS3BC features copper tube and aluminum fin coils for efficient heat transfer, a permanently lubricated PSC motor and a one-piece top intended to increase airflow and contribute to the unitís quiet operation. The interior components are protected by a galvanized steel cabinet with a polyester urethane finish and a metal jacket that further guards the coil from outdoor hazards. Optional accessories, such as a starter kit or fan delay kit, also are available for this series.
This model also is promoted for the easy access it allows to interior components and its ease of maintenance due to full-service valves for the refrigeration system, a removable top grille, and access panels to all controls and the compressor located on the side of the unit.

Have had this 5 ton unit in since our house was built. Have only had to replace contacts in starter and the capacitor about 4 or 5 years ago. Keep it clean and cover it up during winter and it will last a good long time. Proper maintenance is important. If you're too lazy or busy to do that, then I hope you have plenty of disposable income to pay someone to repair or replace it. It's easy to blame the manufacturer. Put a little time in to care for it and you'll come out in the long run.

"Not so happy"
Any ac unit can go bad at any given moment. The good: When first installed I had a 17-21 degree temp drop across the coil. Uses a 12 seer scroll compressor. The bad: You have to have the correct orifice and refrigerant charge in the system. It is critical that the unit is properly charged as it uses an orifice to control the freon flow. My only complaint is that my contractor was given the incorrect replacement pump for the unit in my shop and we had record heat last year and it has taken over a year to get the correct replacement compressor. Now hopefully he will be back tomorrow to properly charge the unit as you need to compensate for long lineset and the correct orifice in the evaporator coil.
