Overview of the C4A4

The Comfortmaker C4A4 is a discontinued air conditioner with an efficiency of up to 14 SEER. It featured a copper tube/aluminum fin coil and a two-speed fan motor. The Copeland scroll compressor was protected by a filter drier supplied for field installation. Comfort Alert diagnostics helped monitor system operation, while easy access service valves and a compressor access panel allowed for easy serviceability. The unit was protected by a galvanized steel cabinet with a high-gloss, baked-on powder coat finish. The C4A4 used R-410A refrigerant.

Review:
"Unreliable, constant stream of costly repairs"
Nothing but trouble with this Comfortmaker AC unit. I had a Carrier at my previous house that only required recharging once in nearly 20 years. In contrast, the Comfortmaker AC unit the HVAC contractor my general contractor recommended (higher commission? More repairs?) has required multiple costly repairs over the past 4 years. I dread any heat wave as it often means turning on the AC only to have it malfunction. I would recommend looking at another brand. It's surprising that Comfortmaker is still in business.

Review:
"Bad unit"
I had this unit installed on 6-1-2011. I got a Comfortmaker because my furnace was a Comfortmaker and I never had any problems. The contractor who put it in was recommended to me by a friend. Well, this was the biggest mistake I ever made. It ran for 2011 and in 2012 I had to have a new coil put in and it kept freezing up. After several visits from the contractor it ran okay in 2013 and 2014. Then in 2015 it wouldn't get cold. I didn't call the contractor back because I realized he didn't know what he was doing! I had several other contractors look the unit over and they stated the compressor was bad! I wouldn't recommend this product to anyone! Junk!

Review:
"Good product, if installed right!"
Comfortmaker is a daughter brand of Carrier, so they are made in the same factory. I don't get why Carrier has such better reviews. It doesn't make sense. I have installed countless Comfortmaker air conditioners and heat pumps, and if the pressures are right on them, and they are installed correctly, they last a long time, and create a great conditioned environment. I have one in my home, and everything works as expected, and my energy bills are also as expected. I think the problem people are seeing is install error!

"Love the Comfortmaker"
Love the Comfortmaker AC unit. It is quiet and efficient and the 10 year No Hassle warranty is the best warranty of any brand that I researched.

Review:
"10-Year, No-Hassle Replacement Warranty is awesome!"
Comfortmakers are excellent products and I love the 10-year, no- hassle, replacement warranty. That means if your compressor goes out, they're not going to fool around with trying to fix that; they will bring you a whole new unit. When it comes down to it, you're buying the same parts, etc., but the warranty and performance of the Comfortmaker brand outdoes them all.

Other C4A4 Reviews

A homeowner on hvac-talk.com asked for opinions on which is the better AC unit, the C4A4 or a similar Lennox unit. The responses all favored the Lennox, although there were no negative comments about the C4A4. Another homeowner on the same site considering whether to purchase the C4A4 or a more expensive Comfortmaker model was advised to go with the other unit because of the two-stage heat.

C4A4 Warranty

The warranty for the Comfortmaker C4A4 air conditioner was comprised of the following:

  • 7-year No Hassle replacement limited warranty
  • 10-year compressor limited warranty
  • 7-year coil limited warranty
  • 5-year parts limited warranty
