Oil-filled Radiators
Oil radiators are classic. In the old days, steam heat passed through those coiled metal contraptions and radiated heat into a room. Today, the concept of an oil radiator has been reformulated into an oil-filled portable space heater. With a design like the vintage models, oil-filled space heaters are efficient, safe, and affordable.
How Oil-Filled Space Heaters Work
In oil-filled radiators, the oil is permanently sealed in the heating chamber with the heating element. The oil does not burn, and it does not ever need to be filled or replaced. Quite simply, the heating element warms the oil when the unit is plugged in, which creates heat that radiates into a room. Oil-filled radiators can retain heat for many hours making them highly efficient, and often recommended for overnight use in bedrooms.
Purchasing an Oil-filled Radiator
Oil radiator prices compare favorably to other space heaters at around $70 to $150. Since the oil isn't actually consumed, there is no issue of fluctuating oil prices. Oil-filled radiators are available where most other space heaters are sold and usually come with a manufacturer's warranty
Are Oil Radiators Safe?
Oil radiators are as safe as any other kind of space heater, meaning there are some risks and it's important to check the safety features on any heater you purchase. Oil-filled radiators generally have a low surface temperature that prevents children and pets from touching a hot part. When used for the first few times, there will sometimes be a strange smell, which is considered normal and should go away after a few uses. As always, follow the safety instructions in the owner's manual and check to make sure that it has been approved by Underwriters Laboratories.
