Trane Inc. makes residential, commercial and industrial furnaces, air conditioners and heat pumps, as well as air cleaners, air handlers, indoor coils, thermostats and other products for home comfort. Trane Inc. owns American Standard and is itself owned by Ingersoll Rand Co. Ingersoll Rand's Climate Solutions segment, of which Trane is one part, saw 2011 annual revenues of more than $8 billion.
Corporate History
Trane began as a family business, founded by James Trane in 1885. Father and son incorporated the business in 1913. Trane was acquired by the American Standard Cos. in February 1984. In November 2007, American Standard Cos. spun off its business divisions, retaining the HVAC division but officially changing its name to Trane. In December 2007 Ingersoll-Rand announced its intention to buy Trane for more than $10 billion, with the deal closing in 2008.
Trane's HVAC manufacturing facilities are located in 29 locations around the world. Trane has hundreds of sales offices in 100 countries and more than 29,000 employees.
Product Lines
Trane manufactures both gas and oil furnaces in a range of efficiencies from 80 to 97.3 percent AFUE. Its top-of-the-line furnace is the XC95m, a fully modulating gas-powered unit capable of self-calibrating for top performance.
Among the manufacturer's top heat pumps is the XL20i, rated up to 19 SEER and 9.0 HSPF with dual-stage heating and cooling. Even the company's base lines, such as the XB13, are capable of reaching up to 14.5 SEER when paired with compatible components.
Among air conditioners, Trane offers options from the economical XB300 to the highly efficient XL20i, with a range of options in between.
Environmental Impact
Trane's CenTraVac water chiller has received a Climate Protection Award from the Environmental Protection Agency because of its low energy usage and low pollution levels. Trane also makes TRACE 700, a software designed to analyze the efficiency and environmental impact of a large building or complex. The company is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council and seeks to support the construction of buildings with low resource requirements.
