Corporate History
In 1912, Tokuji Hayakawa established the company that would later become Sharp.
In 1935, it became incorporated as Hayakawa Metal Works Institute Co. The
company was renamed the Sharp Corporation in 1970. In 1983, Sharp
revolutionized room air conditioners by releasing one that used a temperature
sensor in a remote control to adjust the temperature. Sharp also introduced the
industry's first air conditioner with humidifying and ventilating functions in
1996 and released air conditioners using Plasmacluster Ion technology to
remove airborne mold fungi in 2001.

Sharp offers a line of room air conditioners, some of which have energy-saving settings
and/or are Energy Star compliant.
