Sears, Roebuck and Co. (Sears) sells residential and commercial appliances for air conditioning and heating. Sears is a publicly owned company, trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol SHLD. With its headquarters situated on a 200-acre campus in Hoffman Estates, Ill., earns annual revenue of more than $40 billion.

Corporate History

The history of Sears, Roebuck and Co. dates back to 1886 when Richard W. Sears, a railroad agent in Minnesota, received a box of gold watches and sold them to other agents. In 1887, Sears moved to Chicago and hired Alvah C. Roebuck to help him with watch repair; the company incorporated and took on the name it holds today in 1893.

In 1908, the Hercules steam heating systems, advertised as "heating plants," began replacing many cast iron stoves and fireplaces as homeowners took advantage of this new central heating source. In 1927 Sears launched its Kenmore brand, although air conditioners were not offered to consumers until 1977. Then in 1928, the Coldspot air conditioners were first offered to the public; these units were sold until the popularity of the Kenmore brand pushed it out of contention in 1977. In the late 1940s, Dornback supplied furnaces to Sears under the trade name "Homart." Homart parts can still be found through Sears PartsDirect. In addition, Heil at one point supplied many of its HVAC products to Sears.

Product Lines

Sears markets high-efficiency air conditioners and heat pumps under the brand names of Kenmore and Carrier. Sears also sells Whirlpool room air conditioners. The most popular types of cooling and heating systems include central air conditioners, individual window and wall units, heat pumps, forced air furnaces, hot water and hydronic heating systems, and heat pumps. Today, the Kenmore brand name is licensed by Sears to other manufacturers. Kenmore air conditioners have been made by various manufacturers including Whirlpool, Electrolux, Keeprite, LG and Friedrich.
