It is probably two stage, but I have a question in to Carrier.

Hi,

I contacted Carrier and asked if they could say it is one or the other or up to the homeowner to decide which they select and this was their response:

"Unfortunately without a model number we would be unable to provide any information on this unit. The furnace model and serial number can be found in one of two locations. On newer models it is located on the outside of the blower door. On other models you will need to remove the front cover of the unit and peer inside. The nameplate/sticker is generally on the left hand side. If you are able to locate the information please contact us back and we would be happy to assist you. Otherwise, we would advise that you contact a local servicing dealer for further direction in this matter. If we can be of further assistance, please advise."

More than a little frustrating. If you have a model number I would contact them directly. You may also be able to contact their sales or the sales rep of a distributor and find out.
