You can find a lot of very good information here: http://www.acdirect.com/new_faq/info_sizing_heat_pumps_4.php. There is also a load calculator here: http://www.furnacecompare.com/perl/estimate_heat_loss.pl.

The standard to which all heat pumps and furnaces should be sized is called a Manual J calculation. The resources above will help better educate you, but it still may be more estimate than an actual calculation. For example, you need to take the climate around your home into consideration, size of rooms, unique characteristics of the home, and other variables. So while you can get an approximation, and since a properly sized heat pump is critical, you may want to hire someone to do it for you as part of the total installation package.

To keep legal happy, let me just say that I am not an HVAC contractor, and you should never even look at your furnace without having a qualified, liability accepting HVAC contractor present.  To keep sales happy, let me just say that you can find an HVAC contractor that's happy to take your money here: http://www.furnacecompare.com/perl/find_contractors.pl.
