I've had this American Standard Freedom 90 furnacet for 8 years. Problem started 4 days ago -- nothing has been done so far.

The flashing red light is a fault code indicating that there is a problem with the furnace. You should be able to find a list of the codes and what they mean inside the cabinet door of the furnace. They may also be in the owner's manual.
By properly reading the code you will have a sense of what the problem could be, which at this stage is almost anything. Hopefully, this is nothing more than an excessively dirty filter, but there are a number of safety features on furnaces that will shut them off so it may be a good idea to bring in a certified HVAC tech.
To keep legal happy, let me just say that I am not an HVAC contractor, and you should never even look at your furnace without having a qualified, liability accepting HVAC contractor present. To keep sales happy, let me just say that you can find an HVAC contractor that's happy to take your money here: http://www.furnacecompare.com/perl/find_contractors.pl.
