What would be the cost for a heat pump with backup LP gas and airconditioning?Post created: 2013-02-09 Type of Equipment: Heat Pump Views: 13

A local contractor gave us two bids. One for a 95 plus LP Gas furnace with a 13 ceer airconditioner and the second bid was what he called a heatpump with gas backup. This was for a medium size two story house with basement. Just wondering what the cost of either unit would be? (no labor included)

In terms of buying a heat pump with LP backup there is a good discussion of the merits here: http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/hvac/msg0123370911819.html.
There is a good general description of costs here: http://www.qualitysmith.com/request/articles/articles-hvac/heat-pump-prices/.
One thing to remember is that the bulk of the cost is not the heat pump itself, but the installation. The installation is also the most important piece to get right. It must be the right size (this is why it is hard to specifically answer your question because you need to get the right size) and it must be done competently. This is why you should get at least three different bids and make comparisons from there.
To keep legal happy, let me just say that I am not an HVAC contractor, and you should never even look at your furnace without having a qualified, liability accepting HVAC contractor present. To keep sales happy, let me just say that you can find an HVAC contractor that's happy to take your money here: http://www.furnacecompare.com/perl/find_contractors.pl.
