There is probably more on Lennox model numbers than anyone may need to know here, but i thought I would include it as it offers a very thorough explanation of how the model numbers are derived and what they explain: http://www.lennox.com/pdfs/Lennox_Model_and_Serial_Nomenclature.pdf.

According to Lennox customer support you can go to their heat pump website (http://www.lennox.com/products/heat-pumps/) select any of their series of heat pumps (XP21, XP17, XP16) and go to the product brochure (Look for "Resources" and click on product brochure with the PDF symbol). Once the brochure comes up go to the page that lists the specifications. There you will find a graph with Model XP17 (for example) on the top of the left column. In that row you will see numbers such as 024, 30, 36 that ascend by 6.

The 024 is their 2 ton, the 030 is 2.5, and so on. So according to the customer support person the model number for a two ton Lennox XP17 is XP17-024.

Hope this helps.
