About Watertown
Watertown is located in southeastern Wisconsin about halfway between Madison and Milwaukee. The city is located on the Rock River, which is a tributary of the Mississippi. The area is marked by drumlins, the elongated hills formed by retreating glaciers. The average winter temperature is approximately 28-30 degrees. Summer high temperatures average around 82 degrees. The city was founded in 1836 on the banks of the Rock River to make use of the river's power. The industry at the time was sawmills, and Watertown continues to thrive as an industrial community. One interesting fact is that the first kindergarten in the United States was founded in Watertown by German immigrants. One of Wisconsin's most famous landmarks stands in Watertown. The Octagon House built in the early 1850s was remarkable then and now, having been restored and maintained by the Watertown Historical Society. The Society offers guided tours as well as occasional concerts and recitals on the site of the Octagon House.
