About Sun Prairie

Sun Prairie, Wisconsin is nicknamed the "Groundhog Capital of the World." Located in Dane County, Sun Prairie is considered part of the Madison Metro Area and an estimated population of 26,429 in 2006. Summertime high temperatures range from the high 70s to low 80s with average lows in the mid 50s to low 60s. Wintertime high temperatures range from the mid 20s to low 30s with average lows from the mid-single digits to mid-teens. Sun Prairie derives its name from an expedition undertaken by A. A. Bird and 45 others at the bequest of President Martin Van Buren in 1837 to build a new capitol. After suffering through nine days of rain they reached this point, where the sun came out, and they called it Sun Prairie. The Sun Prairie Sweet Corn Festival marks the end of the annual corn harvest.
