About Racine
The city of Racine is the seat of Racine County, Wisconsin. It was established in 1838, and officially incorporated as a city in 1848. Its name is French for “root.” It is located in the southeastern portion of the state on the western shore of Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Root River. The city is noted for its industry, and it was here that malted milk was invented and first manufactured. The Dairyland Greyhound track is located just outside Racine, which is situated about 15 minutes south of Milwaukee. In addition, the Wind Point Lighthouse, which remains an active aid to coastal navigation, is located at the northern mouth of the Racine Harbor. Annually, the temperature in the summer averages in the 70s. In contrast, the winter temperatures average in the 20s. Approximately 36 inches of precipitation fall each year.
