The city of Onalaska is located in La Crosse County, Wisconsin. It is situated in the southwestern portion of the state, on the Black River. Onalaska’s nickname is “The Sunfish Capital of the World.” The city received its name because of the literary interests of an early settler, Thomas Rowe, who enjoyed a poem about Oonalaska’s shores, and decided to name the town after this mythical place, dropping the first O. This word is thought to be Aleutian for “living together in harmony.” Onalaska is the home of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Hamlin Garland.
