Although John Stoner began farming in the area of Fitchburg, Wisconsin in 1837, the first permanent settlers were George and Joseph Vroman, Dutch immigrants who came to the area to work on the state capitol in Madison, but also began farming and built a home 1839. Known for its lush rolling fields, Fitchburg didn't officially became a city until April 26, 1983 due to annexation of its land by Madison as it is only ten minutes south of that city.
