About Yakima
Yakiima city is a county by itself in the state of Wasington. The Japanese sounding name makes one curious to know how the name originated. There are several legends on this subject but the one that sounds most plausible is that it takes the name after an incident in which the daughter of the local chief ran away from home and lived on the banks of the river, later named Yakima. The translation of Yakima is "Run Away".
Natives lived on the banks of Columbia and Yakima rivers. An American group of explorers arrived in the valley in 1885 and found the place to be conducing to settling, with fertile soil, salmon in the rivers and abundant wild life for food. More settlers followed suit and the high influx led to disputes with the Natives, resulting in a war between the Natives and the Settlers, which is known as the Yakima Indian War of 1855.
Weather conditions are pretty good with 300 sunny days in the year. However, summer highs average 87° F in July, and low 20s in December and January.
