About Richland
Richland, Washington is located in Southern Washington in the Tri-Cities region, which also includes the cities of Kennewick and Pasco. The Yakima River and the Columbia River are nearby. The average temperature in the summer months is roughly around 60-70 degrees. The average temperature in the winter months is roughly around 30-40 degrees. The city of Pasco was once a small farm town with a small population. It was later heavily populated by the US Army and by workers for the Hanford Engineering Works (also called the Hanford Site). The Hanford Site contained a facility for the famous Manhattan project. The population of about 300 in 1943 was 83 times larger within two years, by 1945. Pasco became a closed city during these years, and people were designated to live in certain apartments and complexes. The government owned almost all of Pasco. Because of the nuclear elements in Pasco's past, Richland High School's mascot became the Bombers with a mushroom cloud as the school emblem/insignia.
