About Des Moines

Des Moines, Washington is located about four miles southwest of Sea-Tac airport, which in turn is about fifteen miles south of Seattle. Des Moines (named after the city in Iowa) is situated on Puget Sound, and the city enjoys beautiful ocean and island vistas, as well as views of the Olympic mountains opposite the Sound. It is one of many suburbs of Seattle and Tacoma. The climate in Des Moines is much the same as the rest of the Seattle and Tacoma metropolitan areas. The average rainfall is around 37 inches, with generally little to no snow occurring during the winter (though averages state 13 inches, most of that never stays on the ground). Temperatures are fairly moderate, due to the influence of the Sound, with daytime averages in the 40s during winter months, and in the 70s during summer months. As with much of the Puget Sound area, there is a great connection between Des Moines and the native peoples of the area, with such tribes as the Duwamish and Muckleshoot having used the area for fishing grounds. The city itself was founded in about 1889, after first being settled by white European settlers about 20 years earlier. There is a beautiful marina located in Des Moines that has berths for 838 small boats. There is also a waterfront park that is especially good for viewing tidal pools during the lower tides of the year (especially in the summer when it is warmer).
