About Battle Ground
Battleground, Washington is located in Clark County. Average temperatures range from the 30s in winter months to the 70s in the summer months. Battleground has quite an interesting history. Oddly enough, there was never a battle fought here. The settlers were expecting an Indian uprising around 1855 while soldiers in nearby Fort Vancouver were fighting the Yakima Indians. The settlers feared that the normally friendly Klickitat tribe would join in the uprising while the soldiers were gone and sent volunteers to the Vancouver fort. During this time, the commander of the fort, William Strong, was supposed to engage the Indians in battle but instead talked them into returning to the fort peacefully. At some point, the Indian Chief Umtuch was killed. It has never been determined if the chief was shot by friendly fire or by one of the soldiers.
