Washington state is known for its cloudy skies and heavy rain falls. It is located in the far
northwest corner of the continental United States, but because it has the benefit of temperate
ocean air it never reaches the severe cold weather that plagues the states further east. The coldest
months of the year in Washington are December and January, and each has a low temperature average of
36 degrees. While this is still above freezing and is the envy of many colder states, there is still
a call for efficient heating systems in Washington homes.
Although the vast majority of heating projects end in satisfied contractors and customers, the state
Attorney General's office is the first stop
for residents that would like to file a complaint against their heating contractor.
In Washington, every HVAC contractor must have a license related to their contracting specialty. To
get the license, there is a bond of $12,000 required for general contractors, and a bond of $6,000
for those registering with a specialty. There are also insurance requirements of at least $200,000
in coverage for public liability and $50,000 or more in coverage for any property damage that may be
caused. In addition, the applicant must be able to furnish an employee account number issued by the
IRS, the tax number for state revenue, the number issued by the agency supplying the industrial
insurance, as well as the applicant's employment security number. The application fee to obtain the
licensing is $103.20, and includes two years of licensing.
One of the special problems in some areas of Washington, including several parts of Seattle, is the
number of older buildings that need to have their systems updated. Some of these systems come with
a host of problems, and the state has set up a
helpful page to help contractors
understand the problems inherent in updating historic homes.
