Garland, Texas is located northeast of Dallas, and 30 minutes from the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport. It is the tenth largest city in Texas, but maintains a comfortable, down-home feeling in spite of its size. Garland was named after Attorney General A. H. Garland in 1887. It weathered numerous fires, complicated by droughts which made fire-fighting difficult, and the first volunteer fire-fighting department was formed in 1889. Garland’s black soil attracted cotton farmers and in its early days, cotton was its main product.
