About Dallas

Dallas residents depend on reliable HVAC equipment for both heating and cooling and on reliable contractors when their appliances disappoint. Traditional heating arrangements such as radiators and boilers are still to be found in many Dallas homes and they continue to do good work. However, renovations and new constructions call for systems that are more in line with modern requirements such as energy efficiency, cost, productivity, and hassle-free operations. Newer versions of heating apparatus such as heat pumps, radiant floor heating, and solar panels are increasingly available in Dallas as the surrounding suburbs such as McKinney, Plano, and Copper Canyon.

Legal Requirements

In order to establish a fuel gas connection to a property, the city of Dallas requires the homeowner to obtain a plumbing permit in accordance with the Dallas Plumbing Code. As for heating, the vented heating system should be proven capable of maintaining a minimum temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit, three feet above the floor.

Since January, 1991, it is mandatory that buildings undergoing significant renovations and which have unvented heating systems, upgrade to a system that is complaint with the 2000 International Residential Code (IRC). January 2006 saw the enforcement of chapter 11 of the 2003 International Energy Code. Upon completion, the building needs to be certified as energy compliant as per set guidelines.

Alternative Energy in Dallas

The city of Dallas has been a leader in the US energy efficiency effort. Dallas has succeeded in reducing its energy usage by 5% over a period of 5 years. The following include some of the changes the city of Dallas has instituted:

  • Incandescent traffic lights have been replaced by LED lights which have resulted in great energy as well as fiscal savings for the city.
  • Methane gas from the McCommas Bluff Landfill has been harnessed as an alternate form of fuel or to be used in the production of natural gas.
  • Government buildings have been given the green make over, again resulting in considerable savings. Solar panels now adorn the roof of City Hall while all chillers, boilers, and cooling towers have been overhauled to meet energy efficient standards.

Similar projects have been undertaken in other city buildings such as the Art Museum.

State Aid for Upgrading Energy Systems

The Dallas County Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) offers help and support to low income households to meet energy conservation efforts by weatherizing their homes. The six page WAP application forms have to be submitted along with proof of income documentation.

Typical Climate in Dallas

Dallas typically enjoys warm to hot summers and mild winters. Located in north central Texas it leans toward humid, tropical weather, generally speaking. Snowfall sometimes occurs in the middle of winter, while April/May brings rain.
