About Yankton
Yankton, South Dakota, is the county seat of Yankton County. It is located along the Missouri River on South Dakota's southern border, about 40 miles southwest of Sioux Falls. Its population was 13,528 as of the 2000 census. Known as the River City, the site of Yankton was visited by Lewis and Clark over 200 years ago. Yankton was the birthplace of NBC anchorman Tom Brokaw and NFL players Lyle Alzado and Adam Vinatieri. Yankton's weather is typical of the upper Great Plains. In January, the average high temperature is 28 degrees and the average low is 8 degrees. In July, the city's average high temperature is 87 degrees and the average low temperature is 62 degrees. Yankton sees about 25 inches of precipitation each year, with May and June being the rainiest months.
