Spearfish, South Dakota, is the largest city in Lawrence County, located along Spearfish Creek in western South Dakota. The famous Old West town of Deadwood is about ten miles southeast of Spearfish. Spearfish is home to about 8,600 people as of the 2000 Census. The Black Hills are just outside of the town. Mining and tourism are the primary industries in Spearfish, which was first settled by non-Indians during the 1870s. Spearfish's climate has great seasonal variance. In January, Spearfish's average high temperature is 36 degrees with an average low of 13 degrees. In July, the average high temperature is 85 degrees with an average low of 58 degrees. Spearfish once saw a 49-degree temperature increase (caused by chinook winds) in two minutes, the fastest such increase ever recorded. Spearfish gets about 20 inches of rain each year, half of it from April to June.
