Spearfish, South Dakota, is the largest city in Lawrence County, located along Spearfish Creek in western South Dakota. The famous Old West town of Deadwood is about ten miles southeast of Spearfish. Spearfish is home to about 8,600 people as of the 2000 Census. The Black Hills are just outside of the town. Mining and tourism are the primary industries in Spearfish, which was first settled by non-Indians during the 1870s. Spearfish's climate has great seasonal variance.
