About Rapid City
Rapid City is in the western part of South Dakota and has a population of about 62,000 people. It is located between the Eastern Slope of the Black Hills and the edge of the plains. The city was originally called “Hay Camp” but became known as “The Gateway to the Black Hills." It was founded in 1876 by miners. Tourism is a major industry in Rapid City as it is the nearest city to Mount Rushmore, a very popular tourist attraction, and is also about 25 miles from Sturgis, South Dakota which is the home of a huge famous annual Motorcycle Rally. The area also features Badlands National Park, Bear Butte State Park, and historic attractions like old mines and buildings from the Black Hills Gold Rush era of the late 1870s. The coldest month is usually January when the average temperature is about 15 degrees and low temperatures can go below zero. It typically snows from November through March. The hottest months are usually July and August when the average high temperatures are about 80 degrees.
