About Mitchell

Mitchell, South Dakota, is the county seat of Davison County. Its population of 14,857 (as of 2006) is more than 75% of the population of Davison County, making it South Dakota's 6th largest city. Mitchell is about 80 miles west of Sioux Falls. It is home to the Corn Palace, a tourist attraction known for the murals made of dried corn that decorate it. It is the hometown of Senator George McGovern. The area was inhabited for centuries by Mandan Indians, whose village near Lake Mitchell remains well-preserved today. Mitchell has wide seasonal variations in its weather. In January, the average high temperature is 26 degrees and the average low is 4 degrees. In July, the average high temperature is 86 degrees and the average low is 62 degrees. Mitchell gets about 24 inches of precipitation each year, with the greatest amounts coming in May and June.
