Mitchell, South Dakota, is the county seat of Davison County. Its population of 14,857 (as of 2006) is more than 75% of the population of Davison County, making it South Dakota's 6th largest city. Mitchell is about 80 miles west of Sioux Falls. It is home to the Corn Palace, a tourist attraction known for the murals made of dried corn that decorate it. It is the hometown of Senator George McGovern. The area was inhabited for centuries by Mandan Indians, whose village near Lake Mitchell remains well-preserved today.
