About Aberdeen

Aberdeen, South Dakota, is the county seat and largest city in Brown County and the third largest city in the state with just over 24,000 people as of 2006. The town is about 30 miles south of the North Dakota border, and about 125 miles northeast of the state capital of Pierre. Sioux Indians have inhabited the area since 1700. Aberdeen was officially established in 1879. The 3M company operates a sizeable plant in the town. Aberdeen's climate experiences great temperature differentials between the seasons. In January, the average high temperature is about 21 degrees with an average low close to 0 degrees. In July, the city's average high temperature is 85 degrees with an average low of 60 degrees. Aberdeen sees just over 20 inches of precipitation each year, with the most rain in May and June.
