Located about 12 miles southwest of Philadelphia, Springfield, Pennsylvania is a residential community of mostly single-family homes. Springfield was founded when Quaker settlers, who arrived with William Penn at Chester in 1682, applied for land there. Now the community has grown to a 2000 Census estimate of 23,677. Located on Crum Creek, the town's first industries included a stone quarry from which many of the original farmhouses, dating from the 1700s, were built.
