About Johnstown
Johnstown is a small city (population 23,906) in southwestern Pennsylvania located 60 miles east of Pittsburgh at the head of the Conemaugh River. The average high temperature in January is 37 degrees and the average high temperature in July is 87 degrees. The average rainfall is about 48 inches per year. Johnstown was settled in 1770 and officially became a town in 1800. Founded by a Swiss German immigrant, Josef Schantz, it was originally called Schantzstadt but later anglicized to Johnstown, Johnstown is best known for the three major floods that occurred there between 1889 and 1977 and for the visit by Charles Dickens via the Pennsylvania Main Line Canal in 1842. Once a major steel producer in the years following World War II, the flood of 1977, among other factors, contributed to the demise of this industry. In the fourth week of June, Johnstown hosts the Thunder in the Valley motorcycle rally.
