About Hazleton

Hazleton, Pennsylvania is in the northeastern part of the state, equidistant from New York City and Philadelphia. It is near the Pocono Mountains and all the attractions that area offers, including resorts, casinos, racetracks. The name came about when a clerk misspelled it in the papers filed for incorporation and it has been Hazleton ever since. The city was incorporated in 1851 and was chartered as a city in 1891. In 1891 when it became a city, Hazleton became the 3rd in the nation to get electric lights. Hazleton got its start as a hard coal (anthracite) mining town and has recently been in the news for its stand on illegal immigration and passing laws to fine employers and landlords for harboring illegals. It is also the birthplace of Judith Stitch Giuliani, wife of Rudy Giuliani. The average temperatures in the winter are in the mid 30s with lows into the teens. The summers average in the 70s, though it can go as high as the low 80s.
