About Altoona

Altoona, PA is the largest city in the south-central region of Pennsylvania, with a population approaching fifty thousand. It is located on the eastern side of the Allegheny Ridge, where it served until the early 1900s as a railway hub uniting Pittsburgh's steel industry to the west with the eastern seaboard.

Average summer temperatures are in the low seventies, occasionally reaching the low eighties; winter sees temperatures from the mid twenties to cold snaps into the teens. Founded as a shop town by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1849, its importance grew in the Civil War as an important producer of locomotives for military use. Altoona's economy today still depends largely on railway revenues.
