About Marion

Marion, Ohio is located in central Ohio, 41 miles north of Columbus. It was founded at the convergence of several highways, including US 23, State Route 4, US 95, and State Route 309. The Sandusky River is located approximately 20 miles west of town. Marion was established in 1821, and named for Revolutionary War hero General Francis Marion, also known as the "Swamp Fox." It is the seat of Marion County, and is located at the convergence of two major railroad lines, which played a significant role in the town's economy until the 1980s. The city's most famous resident was President Warren Harding, who was the editor of the city's newspaper for a time before his presidential candidacy and election. The president and his wife are buried in the city, and two of the major historical landmarks of Marion include Harding's home and his tomb. The average temperature during the winter is 31.2 degrees. In summer the temperature averages 69.6 degrees. The city receives an average of 24 inches of snowfall annually. Marion is named the Popcorn Capital of the world because it produces more popcorn than any other region. The Popcorn Festival is held every year in September to celebrate this.
