About Findlay
The city of Findlay is located in the northwest part of the state of Ohio, 43 miles south of Toledo. It is located at the convergence of I-75 and US 224. It is about an hour south of Lake Erie. The community grew around Fort Findlay, a stockade that was established during the War of 1812, and was named after Colonel James Findlay, who built the fort that was named in his honor. It is the seat of Hancock County. The city was a stop on the Underground Railroad. Oil and gas were discovered nearby in the 1880s, and the city began to grow rapidly. The glass manufacturing industry also thrived here. Other interesting features of the city include its nickame, "Flag City USA." This term was coined when, in 1960, a man named John Cooke worked to obtain a flag for everyone in the city because he felt that all Americans should display the Stars and Stripes on Flag Day. The US House of Representatives made this title official in 1974, and a "Welcome to Flag City USA sign" is displayed on the I-75 overpass at the first northbound exit for the city. The temperature averages in the mid-70s during the summer months. In the winter months, the temperatures average in the low 20s.
