About Euclid
Moses Cleveland named Euclid as the first town in what was then known as the Western Reserve. Founded in 1809, its first settler was David Dille, who served as a lieutenant during the Revolutionary War. The township was named after the Greek mathematician Euclid. The township began as an agricultural area, and later developed a ship building industry. The city incorporated and then rescinded its incorporation shortly after. It reincorporated in 1903. The discovery of bluestone resulted in the building of several quarries in the 1880s. One of the most famous citizens of Euclid was Charles Brush, who invented the Arc Lamp. Cleveland became the first city in the United States to have its public square illuminated by these lamps in 1879, and many other cities throughout the country soon followed suit. The average winter temperature for the city is 25.8 degrees. In summer, the average temperature is 71.3 degrees. Snowfall averages 56.3 inches annually – nearby Lake Erie results in a large amount of lake effect snow. Euclid is about 30 minutes from downtown Cleveland.
