About Syracuse

You can find Syracuse approximately halfway between Rochester and Utica. According to Wikipedia, in July, Syracuse's daily high temperature averages 82 degrees, but in January the daily high is 31 degrees. The big event of the year is The Great New York State Fair, which lasts about a week and a half, at the end of August and start of September. The 161st Great New York State Fair will take place in 2007. In the 2001 season, fair attendence broke the one million mark for the first time, and has continued to do so since.

Syracuse is home to the world's largest snowplow. Averaging over 100 inches per year, we certainly need it. It's located at the airport, and no matter how much snow it gets there, our airport never closes. There is an annual contest called the Golden Snowball to determine which upstate New York city gets the greatest snowfall - Albany, Buffalo, Rochester, or Syracuse. Syracuse almost always wins it by a sizable margin.

Syracuse is called the Salt City, or the city that salt built. Because of the many natural salt springs here, it was natural to use these to produce salt. With the building of the Erie Canal, the nation could be supplied with salt from Syracuse. You can visit the Salt Museum at Onondaga Lake Park, which details how salt became a major industry for Syracuse.
