Rye, New York, is the name of both a town and a city within that town in Westchester County. This article refers to the town (which surrounds but does not include the city). The town is about 25 miles north of New York City, and had a population of just under 44,000 as of 2000. The town dates back to 1660, when it was founded by a settler from Connecticut who purchased Manursing Island from the Monhegan tribe of Native Americans. It is a wealthy bedroom suburb of New York City. Rye's climate is typical of New York State, with average January high temperatures of 36 degrees and lows averaging 21 degrees. Its July temperatures are an average high of 83 degrees and low of 65 degrees. Rye receives about 50 inches of precipitation each year, spread fairly evenly among the months.
