About Rotterdam
Rotterdam, New York, was once part of Schenectady and now borders it. It became a separate town in 1820 and was situated on the Erie Canal. A Canal Fest is one of the city’s annual events. It was originally settled by immigrants from the Netherlands and named for their home city of Rotterdam. A unique historical feature is the Mabee house, believed to be the oldest still standing in the entire Mohawk valley. It was built in 1671 as a fur trading post but was sold to the Mabee family who farmed there in 1706 and have owned the property ever since. There was considerable action here during the Revolutionary War and the area was invaded by the British. The climate here is mild in summer and cold in winter. Winter temperatures range from the low teens to the 30s and summer temperatures range from the mid-50s to the low 80s. Average precipitation is about 36 inches a year, over 50” of which is snow.
