About Lackawanna
Lackawanna, NY is located immediately south of Buffalo NY, on the western shore of Lake Erie. It was originally part of the Seneca Indian reservation until it was sold in 1842. Summer temperatures average in the 60s, and highs usually do not go above 79 degrees. The winters are very cold, with temperatures averaging in the 20s but often feeling colder because of winds blowing off the lake. The town was historically a factory town, and Lackawanna Steel (eventually acquired by Bethlehem Steel) was the central business of the area until it closed. One famous resident of Lackawanna was the late Father Nelson Baker, who was known for advocating the construction of what is now a National Shrine, the Our Lady of Victory Basilica. He is under consideration for canonization in the Catholic church.
