About Ithaca

Ithaca, NY, is a medium-sized city located in the Finger Lakes region of Central New York State. The County Seat of Tompkins County, it sits on the southern shore of Cayuga Lake. The city's permanent population is around 30,000 people, but this figure swells and shrinks dramatically on a seasonal basis, as Ithaca is the home to two major institutions of higher learning, Cornell University and Ithaca College. Together, these schools are temporary homes to over 20,000 students annually, and as such, Ithaca can properly be considered a college town.

Just as life in the city is defined by collegiate affiliation, the physical composition of the city is defined by its deep, scenic gorges, formed by streams running into Cayuga Lake from its steep surrounding hills. The gorges contribute the natural backdrop to the city in general and Cornell's campus specifically, and are celebrated on the city logo ["Ithaca Is Gorges"], which can be found as a calling card on t-shirts and bumper stickers around the world.

Summer high temperatures average 80-82° F, and winter low temperatures average in the high teens.
