Babylon, New York, is both the name of a town in Suffolk County, New York, and of a hamlet within that town (this description applies to the town). Babylon is on the southern shore of Long Island. It is about 40 miles east of the borough of Queens. Its population stood at just under 212,000 as of 2000. White settlement in the area started about 1690, but the town was established by Nathaniel Conklin around 1803, who called the area a "new Babylon," after the ancient Mesopotamian city. Its average July temperatures are a high of 81 degrees and a low of 67 degrees, while its average January temperatures are a high of 37 degrees and a low of 24 degrees. Babylon receives about 43 inches of precipitation each year, with spring being slightly wetter than other seasons.
